Is sewage or dirty water coming up from a drain, toilet or tub?
If yesCall now. Stop running water, do not flush, and keep people and pets away from it.
Is water rising in the crawlspace, or around the furnace or water heater?
If yesCall now. Do not go into the water, and do not touch anything electrical that is wet.
Did your sump pump stop while the basin keeps filling?
If yesCall now. If you can reach them without stepping in water, check that the pump is plugged in and its breaker is on.
What to do while you wait
- Stop using water: no flushing, showers, laundry or dishwasher.
- If you know where it is and can reach it safely, turn off the main water valve.
- Keep kids and pets away from dirty water.
- Do not go into a flooded crawlspace or touch wet cords, outlets or appliances.
- If it is safe, move rugs, boxes and anything valuable away from the water.
- Take photos. They help us, and they help with an insurance claim.
- If you smell gas or see sparks, leave the house and call 911.
